Turtle Rock Studios helped invent the modern co-op zombie shooter with Left 4 Dead, and Back 4 Blood is the team's return to that formula with one big new idea dealt into the middle of it. Before every run you build a deck of cards that shapes how your character plays, and the game's AI director answers with Corruption Cards of its own, so no two attempts at a level feel quite the same.

The world has fallen to the Devil Worm, a parasite that has turned most of humanity into the Ridden. Your crew of Cleaners, survivors operating out of the settlement of Fort Hope, includes the veteran Walker, the bat-swinging Holly, the doomsday prepper Hoffman and the medic Doc, with Evangelo, Jim, Mom and Karlee rounding out the roster. The Ridden come in sprinting hordes, backed by mutated specials like the hulking Tallboy, the explosive Retch, the shrieking Snitcher and the colossal Ogre, and the campaign moves through the town of Evansburgh and the countryside around it.

The cards are what make it more than a remake. You might build a tank who soaks up punishment, a medic who keeps the team on its feet or a sharpshooter who stacks damage bonuses, while Corruption Cards throw in tougher enemies, extra hordes, poor visibility or bonus objectives. Weapon attachments and in-run upgrades add another layer, and the Swarm mode lets players take turns as the Cleaners and as the Ridden. It was built around four-player co-op with friends, though solo players can take on the campaign with AI teammates.

Released in 2021 to generally favorable reviews for its gunplay and its fresh spin on the Left 4 Dead structure, Back 4 Blood is the spiritual successor that series' fans waited over a decade for. Fittingly for a game built around a deck, this edition takes its name from the cards at the center of its design, and it is a natural pickup for anyone who spent years holding the line in Left 4 Dead's saferooms.
