Four survivors, a horde that never stops coming and a safe room just out of reach: Turtle Rock Studios built a genre around that formula with Left 4 Dead, and Back 4 Blood, released in 2021, is the team's return to it. Published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, it keeps the frantic, shoulder-to-shoulder chaos that made the original so addictive and wraps it in a deck-building twist that makes every run play out differently.
You play as the Cleaners, a crew of hardened veterans fighting back against the Ridden, people turned into monsters by a parasite called the Devil Worm. Each Cleaner brings a personality and a perk, from Holly and her bat to Doc's healing and Walker's sharp shooting, and the banter between them gives the campaign its gallows humor. The Ridden come in swarms of common infected punctuated by mutations such as the hulking Tallboy, the ranged Hocker and the shrieking Snitch, while towering Ogres turn some acts into desperate set-piece fights.
The card system is the big idea. Before each level you build a deck of cards that shape your team's strengths, adding extra health, faster reloads, more stamina or melee power as the campaign goes on. The game's AI Director plays its own corruption cards in return, throwing in fog, extra mutations or tougher objectives, so no two runs of the same level feel identical. Supply points earned between levels unlock more cards and cosmetics, and a competitive Swarm mode lets players take control of the Ridden to hunt the Cleaners.
Back 4 Blood was built first and foremost for co-op, with bots filling any empty seats on the team, and it plays best with a group that talks, shares ammo and panics together. If you wore out Left 4 Dead years ago, this is the closest spiritual successor from the people who made the original, and a fun, gory reminder of why four-player zombie shooters became a staple of late nights with friends.
