Item Description
Most open-world games hand you a horse. Atlas Fallen hands you the desert itself. Built by Deck13 Interactive, the German studio behind Lords of the Fallen and The Surge, and published by Focus Entertainment in 2023, it lets you skim across the dunes of a ruined land as if the sand were ice, carving long arcs between crumbling ruins at a speed that turns ordinary travel into the part of the session you look forward to.
You begin as one of the Nameless, a laborer at the very bottom of a world ruled by the tyrant god Thelos, whose followers strip the land of Essence, the glittering substance that fuels its magic. Everything changes when you find a sentient Gauntlet that houses a spirit with a grudge of its own against Thelos. Piece by piece the Gauntlet grows stronger, and with it you raise buried platforms out of the sand, solve timed puzzles and shape weapons out of the ground beneath your feet.
Combat is where Deck13's ideas get bold. Every hit builds Momentum, a meter that unlocks evolved forms of your weapons and stronger abilities as it climbs, but also leaves you more exposed to damage the higher you push it. Spend it on a crushing finisher, or keep riding the risk? That push and pull makes fights against the Wraiths, the sand-born monsters that stalk the land, feel aggressive and tactical at once, especially against the larger ones, whose armored limbs you break apart before going for the kill. Abilities and weapon modifiers mix into builds of your own, and the campaign was designed so a second player could join in co-op.
Critics were divided, praising the traversal and the layered combat while knocking a fussy camera and a thin story, and that honest mix is part of the appeal now. Atlas Fallen is a flashy, fast PS5 action RPG with a hook nothing else quite copies, the kind of adventure that rewards an evening of surfing dunes and shattering Wraiths without asking for a hundred-hour commitment.
