Item Description
The exhibits in this vault are not supposed to come alive. In Atari Mania you are the caretaker of a mysterious collection housing the company's history, and keeping it in order means diving headfirst into microgames that play like Centipede, Breakout, Missile Command, Asteroids and dozens of other classics, each squeezed into a few frantic seconds.
Illogika built it in the mold of WarioWare: more than 150 quick-fire challenges, each giving you a single instruction and a heartbeat to obey. The fun is in the remixing. Familiar Atari games turn up bent out of shape, mashed together or given ridiculous new goals, so knowing your 2600 library is half the battle and part of the joke. Between rounds you explore the vault itself in pixel-art adventure segments, uncovering more of the story and opening up new stages.
Atari released it in 2022, the year the company marked its 50th anniversary, and it plays like a love letter to its own catalogue, packed with nods to arcade cabinets, cartridge-era characters and the woodgrain console. Sessions are short, the pace ramps up as the microgames speed along, and it is a great game to pass around a room full of people who remember those joysticks. On PS5 it is a small, cheerful physical release that celebrates where home gaming began.
