Item Description
Astro's mothership, a spaceship shaped exactly like a PlayStation 5, gets ripped apart by an alien attack, scattering its parts and its crew across the galaxy. It is a fitting setup for a game that is, among other things, a giant celebration of PlayStation history. Team Asobi's Astro Bot took the little robot from tech demo mascot to full-blown platforming star, and it ended 2024 by winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
What makes it so special is how inventive it is from level to level. Nearly every stage introduces a new idea and then has fun with it, often built around a power-up you will only use in that one place: a dog-shaped jetpack that rockets Astro through walls, spring-loaded frog boxing gloves, a stopwatch that freezes time or a sponge suit that soaks up water until Astro swells into a giant. The DualSense controller is part of the design in a way few games manage. You feel raindrops, sand and ice through the haptics, the adaptive triggers add resistance to certain actions, and you steer Astro's Dual Speeder between planets by tilting the controller itself.
Then there are the bots. Hidden throughout the galaxy are crew members to rescue, and many of them are cameo versions of characters from decades of PlayStation games, dressed up as heroes from across the platform's history. Finding them is half the fun, and the crash-site hub fills up with your rescued crew as you go, turning it into a lively museum of the brand. Special tribute levels go further, recreating the feel of classic PlayStation franchises in Astro's world in ways that will make longtime players grin.
Astro Bot grew out of Astro Bot Rescue Mission on PlayStation VR and Astro's Playroom, the free showcase that came built into every PS5, but this is the first time the series has felt like a complete, full-sized adventure. It is approachable enough for younger players, challenging enough in its optional levels to test platforming veterans and charming the whole way through. It is the kind of game that shows off what the PlayStation 5 can do, and it is the platformer to own on the console.
