Item Description

Longships beached on English sand, a monastery burning on the hill, and a horn calling your crew to raid: Assassin's Creed Valhalla knows exactly what fantasy it is selling. You play Eivor, raised in the Raven Clan, who sails with their adoptive brother Sigurd from a fractured Norway to ninth-century England to carve out a new home amid the Saxon kingdoms. You can choose to play Eivor as a man or a woman, or let the story's own mysteries decide.

The heart of the game is Ravensthorpe, the settlement you found and build up with the spoils of each raid. Every new building opens up something: a blacksmith, a tattoo parlor, a barracks for your Jomsvikings, a fishing hut, a hidden bureau where the Hidden Ones keep watch. Around it lies a huge map of Mercia, Wessex, East Anglia and Northumbria, where Eivor forges alliances with jarls and kings, King Alfred among them, while the Order of the Ancients schemes in the background. Visions of Odin's Asgard and the giants' realm of Jotunheim add a strand of Norse myth beneath the history.

Combat is heavier and bloodier than in Origins or Odyssey, with dual-wielding of almost any weapon pairing, including two shields if you insist, and brutal finishers. River raids, assaults on fortified castles and a growing skill constellation keep the long campaign moving. Valhalla is also packed with charming Viking diversions: flyting duels of rhyming insults, drinking contests, the dice game Orlog and dozens of odd world events. The soundtrack, from Jesper Kyd, Sarah Schachner and Einar Selvik of Wardruna, gives every voyage a mournful, thunderous weight.

This is Assassin's Creed at its largest, and one of the longest campaigns in the series, a game you can live in for weeks. It completes the RPG trilogy that began with Origins, and for PlayStation 4 players drawn more to the Viking saga than to the hidden blade, it is the entry with the strongest sense of building something of your own.
