Item Description

For years, the most requested setting in Assassin's Creed was feudal Japan, and when Ubisoft Quebec finally delivered it, the studio gave the series two heroes instead of one. Assassin's Creed Shadows splits the journey between Naoe, a shinobi from the Iga province, and Yasuke, the African warrior who rose to become a samurai in the service of Oda Nobunaga, and switching between them changes the game in a way the franchise has never quite tried before.

Naoe is the purest Assassin the series has had in years. She is quick, quiet and fragile, built for climbing, hiding and striking from darkness with her hidden blade, kusarigama and tools like kunai and smoke. Shadows takes its name seriously: light and darkness matter, so snuffing out lanterns, staying out of the moonlight and going prone in tall grass or crawl spaces is how she slips through a fortress unseen, and a grappling hook gets her onto rooftops fast. Yasuke is the opposite. He cannot climb nearly as freely and is poorly suited to sneaking, but he is an armored powerhouse who smashes through doors and walls and takes on whole garrisons with heavy weapons, firearms and a bow. Many missions can be played with either hero, which makes choosing your approach part of the fun.

The open world changes with the seasons. Ponds freeze over in winter and open new routes while the bare landscape offers less cover, and rain muffles your footsteps while sending patrols on new paths, so the same castle can feel like a different challenge depending on when you hit it. Scouts help track down targets on a mission board, and between missions you can customize a hideout and build up a league of shinobi allies who aid you in the field. The setting itself, Japan in a time of upheaval and war, is rendered with real beauty, from cherry blossom valleys to mist-shrouded mountain temples.

Shadows arrived in 2025 after a long development and became one of the most talked-about entries in the series, both for its two-hero structure and its return to more stealth-focused play compared with Valhalla. On PlayStation 5 it is an absolutely gorgeous game, and the place to see the Creed finally reach the land of the shinobi.
