Item Description

For the first few hours, Assassin's Creed III hides its biggest secret in plain sight. You begin as Haytham Kenway, a charming Englishman who crosses the Atlantic to Boston, gathers a band of capable allies and looks every inch the series hero, until a single moment reveals which side of the centuries-old war he is really fighting for. It is one of the boldest twists the franchise ever pulled, and it hands the story to its true lead: Haytham's son Ratonhnhaké:ton, a young Mohawk who takes the name Connor and joins the Assassins after the war reaches his village.

Ubisoft Montreal debuted its AnvilNext engine here and used it to push the formula outward. The Frontier is a vast wilderness of forests, cliffs and rivers, and Connor's free-running finally leaves the rooftops behind, carrying him through the tree canopy as easily as across Boston's chimneys. The seasons turn as the story moves on, and deep winter snow slows you on the ground. Hunting is a full system of bait, snares and pelts to trade, and the Davenport Homestead grows from a lonely manor into a working settlement as you recruit craftsmen and families to it. Combat is heavier and more brutal than in the Ezio games, mixing the tomahawk and Hidden Blades with muskets, a bow and the rope dart, which can haul an enemy up into the branches.

Then there is the sea. Captaining the Aquila through storms and rogue waves, calling broadsides and swivel-gun shots against Royal Navy frigates, was the surprise hit of the game, so popular that Ubisoft built its next entry, Black Flag, around it. On land, Connor is pulled through the Revolution's turning points, from the Boston Tea Party to Bunker Hill, alongside figures such as George Washington, Samuel Adams and Charles Lee, and the story refuses to pretend the birth of a new nation was good news for Connor's people. Lorne Balfe's score gives the whole thing a sweeping, cinematic frame.

It is also the end of an arc. Assassin's Creed III closes out the modern-day story of Desmond Miles that began with the very first game, and its online multiplayer introduced Wolfpack, a cooperative mode built around teams hunting targets together. Played on the Xbox 360 it was made for, it captures the series at its most ambitious: the moment it traded Europe's old cities for open wilderness and discovered the naval play that would define what came next.

About the game

Assassin's Creed III is an open-world action-adventure game set primarily in 18th-century Colonial America during the American Revolution. Players control two characters across the story: Haytham Kenway, a British Templar operating during the French and Indian War, and his half-Mohawk son Ratonhnhaké:ton (also known as Connor), who becomes an Assassin. Gameplay takes place across Boston, New York City, and a large wilderness frontier, with free-running, stealth, and combat using weapons including tomahawks, muskets, bows, and the series' signature Hidden Blades. The game introduces naval combat through Connor's captaining of a warship, as well as hunting, a homestead economy system, and seasonal weather that affects gameplay. A modern-day framing narrative follows Desmond Miles using the Animus to relive his ancestors' memories.
