Connor moves through dense woodland with the same fluid parkour the series is famous for, but now that traversal extends to snow-covered trees and sprawling frontier wilderness — a genuine departure from anything that came before. Naval combat made its debut here too, a feature so well-received it became the entire foundation of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Add in a layered homestead management system, a massive open world, and one of the most ambitious map footprints the franchise had tackled up to that point, and you've got a release that swung for something genuinely ambitious.
