Altaïr's story did not end in Jerusalem. Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines picks up the moment the first game closes, as Altaïr storms the Templar stronghold at Acre only to watch the surviving Templars slip away by sea to Cyprus. He follows, with an unwilling companion in tow: Maria Thorpe, the Templar agent who wore Robert de Sablé's armor as a decoy in the original game, now spared and dragged along on a hunt that will change both of them.
Developed by Griptonite Games for the PlayStation Portable, Bloodlines was the first Assassin's Creed built for Sony's handheld, and it brings the series' signature climbing, stalking and hidden-blade kills to the port cities of Limassol and Kyrenia. The Templars have bought Cyprus outright from King Richard and rule it with an iron fist under their Grand Master, Armand Bouchart, so Altaïr allies with a local resistance and works his way through Bouchart's lieutenants. The game adds new tricks of its own, such as ledge assassinations that let Altaïr drag a guard off a rooftop edge, while Templar Coins collected around the island upgrade his health and weapon damage.
Story is the real draw. Bloodlines bridges the original Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed II, and it gives Altaïr room to become more than the arrogant master assassin of the first game. His relationship with Maria moves from hostility to loyalty to something deeper as she sees what the Templars are capable of, and the search for a hidden Templar archive raises the stakes for the order's secrets. It is a chapter of Altaïr's life the console games only hint at.
Bloodlines was also designed to link with the PlayStation 3 version of Assassin's Creed II, unlocking weapons and transferring coins as florins between the two games, an early experiment in handheld and console play feeding each other. Played today on original PSP hardware, it is the missing chapter in Altaïr's full journey, and a neat piece of Assassin's Creed history from the series' early years.
