Item Description
The longship slides up an English river under a grey sky, a horn sounds, and Eivor's crew pours onto the bank to raid a monastery. Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Ubisoft Montreal's Viking saga and a launch title for the Xbox Series X, is built around moments like that, and it captures the swagger and brutality of the age as vividly as any game set there.
You play Eivor, raised in the Raven Clan alongside the ambitious Sigurd, who leaves the harsh fjords of Norway to stake a claim in ninth-century England. The country is a patchwork of rival Saxon kingdoms, and Eivor's task is to forge alliances across Mercia, East Anglia, Northumbria and beyond, while King Alfred of Wessex looms as a formidable opponent. At the center of it all is Ravensthorpe, the settlement you grow from a muddy camp into a thriving village with a blacksmith, a barracks and much more, funded by the raids you lead.
Combat is heavier and more physical than in earlier entries. Eivor can dual-wield almost any combination of axes, swords, flails and even shields, and a sprawling skill tree rewards experimenting with builds. The Hidden Ones are here too, and Eivor's growing involvement with the Brotherhood ties the Viking adventure back to the series' long war with the Order of the Ancients. The world is also packed with distractions in the best way: flyting, an insult-trading battle of rhymes, Orlog, a dice game plenty of players lost whole evenings to, drinking contests, fishing and hunting.
Then there are the visions. Eivor's dreams carry you to Asgard and Jotunheim, where you play as Havi, the guise of Odin, in sequences that lean fully into Norse myth. The score by Jesper Kyd, Sarah Schachner and Einar Selvik ranges from haunting vocals to thundering drums. Huge, generous and confident, Valhalla is a Viking epic big enough to lose a whole winter in, and a fitting showcase for the console it launched alongside.
