Item Description

What if the hero spent the whole game hunting Assassins? Assassin's Creed Rogue turns the series inside out by putting you in the boots of Shay Patrick Cormac, a gifted young Assassin in colonial North America whose faith in the Brotherhood shatters after a mission in Lisbon ends in catastrophe. Disillusioned and left for dead, Shay switches sides, joins the Templars, and spends the rest of the story tracking down the friends who trained him. Seeing the conflict entirely from the Templar side gives every target a moral weight the series rarely managed.

Ubisoft Sofia led development, and Rogue takes the superb naval play of Black Flag into colder waters. Shay's ship, the Morrigan, cuts through the ice of the North Atlantic, ramming through floes, raking enemies with a Puckle gun and trailing burning oil, while enemy crews now try to board and take her. Harpoon hunting returns as well, sending Shay after narwhals and whales among the icebergs. On land, the River Valley, the frozen North Atlantic and a war-scarred New York give the Seven Years' War a sprawling stage.

Playing as a Templar changes the stealth too. Former brothers now hide in haystacks, bushes and rooftops waiting to ambush Shay, and whispered warnings signal that a hunter is close, so the predator becomes the prey. Shay's air rifle adds sleep, berserk and firecracker darts, and later a grenade launcher, to a satisfying long-range toolkit. Familiar faces such as Achilles Davenport, Haytham Kenway and Adéwalé appear along the way, and the story threads together Assassin's Creed III, Black Flag and Unity.

Rogue launched on the same day as Unity and was overshadowed by its next-generation sibling, which is exactly why it is worth rediscovering. It was the last Assassin's Creed built for the PS3 and Xbox 360 generation, a fitting send-off for the Kenway era and the one entry that finally lets the Templars make their case.
