Assassin's Creed Mirage opens on the rooftops of Baghdad with a pickpocket, not a demigod. After Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla grew the series into sprawling hundred-hour RPGs, Ubisoft Bordeaux went the other way and built a tighter, stealth-first adventure that looks straight back to the 2007 original. Its hero is Basim Ibn Ishaq, the mysterious Hidden One players met in Valhalla, and this is the story of how a street thief became that man.

The setting is ninth-century Baghdad at the height of the Abbasid golden age, a city of scholars, markets and the famous House of Wisdom, and it is one of the most densely detailed single cities the series has built. Haunted by disturbing visions, Basim lashes out, has to flee, and is taken in by the Hidden Ones at Alamut under his mentor Roshan, voiced with real gravity by Shohreh Aghdashloo. He returns to Baghdad to dismantle the Order of the Ancients one target at a time.

How you take those targets down is the point. Assassinations play out as investigations, with leads, informants and multiple ways into a guarded palace or a crowded workshop. Blending into crowds matters again, a notoriety system makes careless violence follow you through the streets, and Enkidu the eagle scouts from above. Basim's kit of throwing knives, smoke bombs, noisemakers and blow darts rewards patience, while open combat leans on parries and punishes a brawl. Assassin Focus lets him chain several silent kills in a single breath, a flourish that never stops feeling great.

Mirage began life as a planned expansion for Valhalla and grew into a standalone game of roughly twenty hours, which turned out to be its biggest selling point: no bloated map, no gear treadmill, just a city and a list of names. It is also the last mainline Assassin's Creed released on PlayStation 4, which gives it a natural place at the end of a PS4 shelf. The Launch Edition branding marks the release that greeted players when Mirage first hit stores in 2023.
