What if Assassin's Creed went back to the rooftops, the crowds and the single, perfectly planned kill? That is the promise of Mirage, Ubisoft Bordeaux's 2023 return to the stealth-first style of the early games. After years of sprawling role-playing epics, Mirage is deliberately tighter and more focused, a love letter to the series' roots built around one city, one young assassin and the patience to strike from the shadows.

That assassin is Basim Ibn Ishaq, first met as a mysterious mentor in Valhalla, here seen as a street thief in ninth-century Baghdad with nightmares he cannot explain. Taken in by the Hidden Ones and trained under the watchful Roshan, he returns to the city to hunt the Order of the Ancients through its districts, markets and palaces. The Baghdad of Mirage is a city at the height of its cultural and scientific golden age, dense with bazaars, mosques, gardens and libraries, and an in-game historical codex adds real background on the people and places you pass.

The play is classic Assassin's Creed with modern polish. Parkour is fluid and rooftop routes are plentiful, crowds are something to blend into rather than background dressing, and Basim's eagle, Enkidu, scouts targets from above. Major contracts can be approached in several ways: bribe the right person, pickpocket a key, follow a lead or simply wait for the perfect moment. Assassin Focus lets Basim chain several takedowns in a single burst, and getting caught is far more dangerous than in recent entries, which keeps every infiltration tense. There is even an optional visual filter that tints the world in the pale blue haze of the 2007 original.

The Deluxe Edition was Ubisoft's step-up release of Mirage, offered with a Prince of Persia-inspired pack of bonus gear and cosmetics plus a digital art book and soundtrack alongside the full game. The heart of it is the same compact, story-driven adventure that won back fans who missed the hooded, hidden-blade style, and a sealed Deluxe Edition is a handsome way to own the entry that brought Assassin's Creed back to where it began.
