Item Description

A hooded figure perches atop a tower, an eagle cries, and he dives into a cart of hay far below. Assassin's Creed, developed by Ubisoft Montreal and released in 2007, turned that leap of faith into a signature moment and introduced a whole new kind of historical action game. You play Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, a proud member of the Assassin order during the Third Crusade, stripped of his rank after a botched mission and sent out by his mentor Al Mualim to earn it back by eliminating nine targets.

The cities are the stars. Jerusalem, Damascus and Acre sprawl across the Holy Land, linked by the open countryside of the Kingdom and anchored by the Assassin fortress of Masyaf, and almost every wall can be climbed. Altaïr scales towers to synchronize viewpoints and reveal the map, blends in with groups of robed scholars to slip past guards, and investigates each target through eavesdropping, pickpocketing and interrogation before moving in for the kill. The hidden blade, counter-driven swordplay and rooftop chases made it feel unlike anything else on the PS3 at the time.

Wrapped around the Crusades is a second story that gave the series its backbone. In the near future, bartender Desmond Miles is held by the Abstergo corporation and forced into the Animus, a machine that lets him relive his ancestor's genetic memories. The mystery of what Abstergo wants, and why Altaïr's past matters, unfolds in tense scenes between memories, while Jesper Kyd's score gives both eras a haunting, choral atmosphere.

Critics noted that the investigations could feel repetitive, but the ambition was undeniable, and nearly everything the series became, from the parkour to Eagle Vision to the Templar conspiracy, starts here. Playing it now is a chance to see the blueprint in its purest form, before the sequels added economies, naval battles and sprawling side content, with Altaïr's cool confidence carrying a story that is as much about questioning orders as following them.
