Item Description

Few shooters have ever committed to a gimmick as completely as Army of Two. EA Montreal's 2008 debut for the Xbox 360 does not just support co-op; it is designed so that almost everything, from clearing a room to crossing a river, is meant for two people. You play Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem, ex-Army Rangers turned private military contractors whose work takes them from a Somalia prologue onward through a string of warzones and a corporate conspiracy as their missions get murkier.

The Aggro system is the game's signature idea. Every shot fired draws attention, and an on-screen meter shows which partner the enemy is focusing on, so one player can play the loud distraction while the other slips around the flank. Scripted co-op moments add to it, such as back-to-back slow-motion standoffs when you are surrounded, synchronized sniper shots and moments where one partner gives the other a boost to reach higher ground. Playing alone, an AI partner takes orders to advance, hold or regroup.

Between missions, the money you earn goes into weapon customization, and the game is happy to be ridiculous about it. Guns can be gold-plated, or "pimped," and the contractors' signature masks gave the duo a look that stuck in players' memories. The tone sits somewhere between action blockbuster and buddy comedy and plenty of banter between the two leads breaking up the firefights.

Army of Two was a solid commercial success that spawned two sequels, and the Platinum Hits line is Microsoft's budget reissue program for Xbox 360 titles that had proven themselves at retail. With a regular co-op partner and a single couch, it is still a refreshing reminder of a time when two-player campaigns were the main event rather than an afterthought.
