Half a century after a catastrophe called the Fires of Ibis scorched the planet Rubicon 3, corporations and mercenaries are still fighting over Coral, the mysterious substance that caused it. You are 621, an augmented mercenary with almost no past, working for a handler named Walter and taking contracts from whoever pays. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is FromSoftware's first new Armored Core in a decade, and it brought the studio's mech series roaring back.
The heart of the game is the garage. Every machine is built from interchangeable heads, cores, arms, legs, boosters, generators and weapons, and the leg type alone transforms how it plays: nimble bipeds, leaping reverse joints, hovering quad legs or tank treads that trade speed for staggering firepower. Missions encourage experimentation, and a build that struggles on one job can tear through the next with the right loadout. When a boss is crushing you, the solution is often not grinding but rethinking, swapping in a shield, a heavier generator or a pair of missile launchers and trying again.
In the air and on the ground, combat is ferocious. Mechs dash, Assault Boost across the map and juggle missiles, rifles and plasma blades, while a stagger system rewards steady pressure: build up an enemy's impact meter until it breaks, then hit it with your heaviest weapons. Directed by Masaru Yamamura, who worked on Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the game brings that sense of aggressive, rhythmic dueling to Armored Core, and its boss fights against towering machines like the Balteus and the Juggernaut are among the most memorable in recent action games. Between missions, the Arena lets you climb a ranked ladder against rival pilots.
The story unfolds mostly over radio chatter among corporations like Arquebus and Balam, the Rubicon Liberation Front and a mysterious voice called Ayre. Choices along the way lead to branching missions and multiple endings, so New Game+ runs reveal new missions and new sides of the conflict. On PlayStation 5 it runs fast and looks sharp, and it is the most approachable entry the series has ever had without losing the customization depth longtime pilots love. Owning it is a great way to hold onto the moment Armored Core returned.
By combining FromSoftware’s longstanding expertise in mech games and their signature robust gameplay, Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon will be a new action experience.
