Item Description
Before FromSoftware became famous for Dark Souls, it was the studio that let you build your own war machine down to the last bolt. Armored Core put you in the cockpit of a Raven, a mercenary pilot for hire, in a world where survivors of a catastrophe called the Great Destruction spent fifty years underground and corporations rose to fill the vacuum. The two biggest, Chrome and Murakumo Millennium, are locked in constant conflict, and the neutral Ravens' Nest brokers their dirty work.
The garage is where the game comes alive. Your Armored Core is completely modular, from head, core, arms and legs to generator and weapons ranging from rifles and missiles to lasers and blades, and every change affects speed, weight and firepower. Credits from missions buy new parts, but ammunition and repairs come out of your pay even when a mission fails, so every sortie is a business decision as much as a fight. Choosing some jobs locks others out, sending the story down branching paths toward a final contract for the Nest that may not be what it seems.
Missions take place in open levels where enemies can attack from any direction, and a terse story unfolds through briefings and messages from your handlers. Then there is versus mode: two players can face off in split-screen or over the PlayStation Link Cable, and reviewers at the time called the head-to-head battles a sure-fire recipe for intense death matches.
This 1997 release is where it all began. Armored Core led straight into Project Phantasma and Master of Arena, then a series that ran across console generations and returned in a big way with 2023's Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. Playing the original shows how much of FromSoftware's identity was already in place: cryptic storytelling, systems that reward experimentation and deep respect for players who want to tinker until the build is just right.
