The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Christine is an elf with a bow, a kingdom plunged into darkness and a long road ahead, and in 1990 that made Arkista's Ring something unusual on the NES: an action-adventure starring a female hero. Developed by NMK and published by American Sammy, it sends her across the Elven Kingdom to recover the ring of Arkista, stolen by the villainous Shogun, leader of a ninja clan.

Each stage is a compact, top-down maze, winding through forests, dungeons and mountains. Clear out the enemies and one of them turns up holding the key to the locked exit, and nothing tells you which, so every screen becomes a quick tactical puzzle. Christine's bow fires only in four directions, and enemies deliberately avoid her line of fire, while ninjas move faster than she does and leap right over walls. Steady progress is the reward: armor pieces, from leather armor and shield up to helmet and mantle, each add a heart, the bow upgrades in steps from short to ultimate, and extra storage lets you carry more. Items arrive as mystery bags whose names you only learn on the select screen, and the rare ones are worth hunting, from a fire wand whose shots pass through walls to an elf mirror that shrugs off projectiles. A cure potion used quickly enough can even pull Christine back from a defeat.

Bosses get their own music and fire faster, harder shots, and the Shogun waits at the end of the road. Beat him and the adventure loops, with hidden exits moved around on later passes. It's often compared to The Legend of Zelda, and that's a fair way to think of it: Zelda's top-down exploration distilled into bite-sized, arcade-paced stages, a charming quick-hit quest that's easy to pick up for a few rounds at a time.

About the game

Arkista's Ring is a game developed by American Sammy for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. It utilizes the familiar top-down perspective featured in many action-adventure games, such as The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Shining Force. What sets it apart is the linear style of the game, as well as the limitation of one primary character. Interestingly, Arkista's Ring is an example of an early game with a female protagonist-an elf named Christine. The game is now considered to be a particularly rare NES title.
