Few games make the right analog stick feel as joyful as Ape Escape 2. Push it and Jimmy swings his net, flick it and the Stun Club cracks, spin it and the Sky Flyer lifts him into the air; the whole adventure is built on the idea the original Ape Escape pioneered, that your gadgets live on the second stick. Specter, the white-furred mastermind of the first game, is back with a new army of helmeted Pipo Monkeys and a fresh plan for world domination, and with the Professor away from his lab, it falls to Jimmy to round them all up.
Every monkey is a little character study, with its own name, personality and habits. Some sit still and wait, others pelt you with projectiles or bolt the moment they spot you, and reading them is half the fun. Jimmy's toolkit grows as he goes, from the Monkey Net, Super Hoop and Slingback Shooter to the RC Car and Water Net, and this sequel adds the scent-baited Bananarang, a Water Cannon for putting out fires and an Electro Magnet for clinging to magnetic surfaces. The Professor's granddaughter Natalie keeps the orders coming, a baby Pipo Monkey sidekick offers hints and a helping hand, and the Freaky Monkey Five, a squad of bosses supercharged on Vita-Z bananas, give the adventure its big showdowns, including a Yellow Monkey who balloons to monstrous size.
Then there is the Gotcha Box, a gashapon machine that turns the coins you collect into concept art, music, comic strips and monkey fables, plus a trio of two-player minigames: Monkey Soccer, Dance Monkey Dance and Monkey Climber. Finish the story and a New Game+ lets you play through again as Spike, the hero of the first game.
Critics loved it, sending it to an 82 on Metacritic, and Sony's Japan Studio fills every stage with slapstick, bright color and a cast of monkeys with names and grudges. It is the sequel that took the PlayStation original's clever control idea and wrapped it in a much bigger personality, and the bright, goofy heart of the series on the PS2.
Ape Escape 2 is the sequel to Ape Escape. In this platform game it's your goal to catch all the apes jumping, walking and flying around the diverse levels the game has to offer. A large arsenal of gadgets can be used to make it all a little easier, with the catching net being the most important weapons of them all. Other gadgets include a RC Car, to drive over monkey's and collect objects, an Ape Radar, to detect the nearest monkey, a baseball bat, to hit monkeys unconscious, and a magnet, to move certain objects in the maps. Your quest is to catch all monkeys in the levels and to stop the evil Specter from taking over the world. All monkeys in the levels are somewhat unique with their own character abilities and their unique name. Some monkeys just sit on their place, while others attack you with projectiles or run away quickly.
