Item Description
The first time a Javelin exosuit launches skyward, skims a waterfall to cool its thrusters and dives into a jungle canyon, Anthem shows what BioWare was reaching for. The studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age set out to build an Iron Man fantasy in a living alien world, and for all its troubles, the flying alone made it unlike anything else in the shared-world shooter genre.
Players are Freelancers, mercenary heroes operating out of the walled outpost of Fort Tarsis, defending humanity against the Dominion and its ruthless leader, the Monitor, who wants to seize the Anthem of Creation, the raw force the vanished Shapers once used to build the world. Four Javelins define your playstyle: the versatile Ranger, the shield-carrying Colossus, the spell-slinging Storm that hovers above the battlefield and the agile, blade-wielding Interceptor. Abilities prime and detonate each other in combos, so a well-coordinated squad can tear through enemies in spectacular fashion. Strongholds such as the Heart of Rage were its showcase missions, and Sarah Schachner's sweeping orchestral score gave every flight a sense of scale.
Anthem launched in February 2019 to a rocky reception, with a story and endgame that never matched the promise of its flight and combat. BioWare kept adding content, including the seasonal Cataclysm event, and planned a full overhaul known as Anthem Next before that effort was cancelled in 2021. Anthem was built entirely around an online connection, and EA ended its service on January 12, 2026, when the servers went offline.
That history is what makes the game so interesting now. Anthem is a fascinating chapter in BioWare's story and in the live-service era as a whole, the moment a studio known for intimate role-playing bet everything on a shared online world. As a collectible it is a time capsule of that ambition, and a striking piece of PlayStation 4 history from the rise and fall of the always-online blockbuster.
