Few things in strategy gaming are as satisfying as watching a production chain you designed finally click into place: grain farms feeding a flour mill, the mill feeding a bakery, and a district of workers finally getting its bread. Anno 1800 is built on that pleasure, and this Console Edition brings Ubisoft Blue Byte's acclaimed industrial-age city builder to PlayStation 5 with an interface redesigned for a controller.
You begin in the nineteenth century with a small island and a handful of farmers, and from there your settlement climbs through population tiers, from Farmers and Workers to Artisans, Engineers and Investors. Each tier wants more. Farmers ask for schnapps and work clothes, Workers for sausages, bread, soap and beer, and the classes above them demand canned food, sewing machines, electricity and luxuries that need goods from across the map. The New World adds a second region with its own people, crops and climate, and shipping coffee, cocoa or rubber home along trade routes becomes as important as anything you build. Expeditions send ships on story-driven voyages for rare items and specialists, while rival tycoons compete for islands, trade deals and, when diplomacy fails, control of the sea.
The Console Edition arrived in 2023, four years after the PC original, and much of its work went into making all this manageable from the couch. Controller-friendly menus and a rebuilt interface put construction, routes and statistics within a few button presses, and both the campaign and the open-ended sandbox carry over. Hours disappear quickly, and a single sandbox map can grow into a sprawling empire of factories, harbors and steamships.
Deep economic city builders are rare on PlayStation, which is exactly what makes this release stand out. If you have ever wanted a console strategy game that rewards planning and patience as much as a PC sim does, Anno 1800 is the one to sit down with.
