Item Description

Gold has a special place in Nintendo 64 history. It was the color of the Ocarina of Time collector's cartridge and of the gold controllers that turned up on store shelves during the console's heyday, and the Analogue 3D Funtastic [Gold] carries that tradition into a modern entertainment center. Analogue's Funtastic collection pays homage to the colored shells Nintendo offered for the N64, and Gold is the one solid finish in a lineup otherwise made of translucent plastics, which gives it a richer, more ceremonial look than its candy-colored siblings.

Inside is Analogue's FPGA recreation of the Nintendo 64. Instead of running software emulation, the Analogue 3D rebuilds the original hardware's behavior on an Intel Cyclone 10 GX chip, plays original N64 cartridges from any region and sends the picture out over HDMI at up to 4K. The front keeps four original-style controller ports, so classic controllers and the Rumble Pak, Controller Pak and Transfer Pak plug straight in, while Bluetooth opens the door to wireless pads such as the 8BitDo 64 controller that Analogue sells in matching Funtastic colors.

The headline feature for longtime fans is Original Display Modes, a set of picture presets that reproduce the look of a consumer CRT, a PVM or a broadcast monitor, or present the image clean and sharp. Bob-omb Battlefield and Koopa Troopa Beach can wear convincing scanlines on a 4K TV instead of the soft, stretched image most N64 owners have settled for. At launch, Time Extension and Wired each scored the system 9 out of 10.

Set it next to a GoldenEye 007 cartridge, a copy of Mario Party 2 and four controllers, and the Gold edition looks like the trophy for a weekend of N64 multiplayer. It is premium hardware for players who want their real cartridges and the best picture they have ever had, dressed in the color N64 fans still connect with Zelda's gold carts.
