Item Description
"Rise from your grave!" Zeus's command, barked in gravelly digitized speech, was the first thing a lot of North American players ever heard from a 16-bit console. Altered Beast came packed in with the Sega Genesis from its 1989 launch until Sonic the Hedgehog took over the job in 1991, which made this mythological brawler the introduction to Sega's new machine for a whole wave of players.
You play a Roman centurion raised from the dead to rescue Zeus's daughter Athena from Neff, lord of the underworld. The basics are punches and kicks, but the hook is transformation: knock down the two-headed white wolves to collect Spirit Balls, and after three power-ups your hero bursts into a beast. Each of the five stages has its own form, from the fireball-hurling werewolf to the weredragon, the werebear, the weretiger and finally a golden werewolf, and every change brings a new set of attacks and a dramatic bit of morphing animation. A second player can join in for simultaneous co-op, and the bosses are wonderfully grotesque, starting with Aggar, a hulking demon who throws his own heads at you.
Altered Beast was directed by Makoto Uchida, who followed it with Golden Axe, and you can see that game's roots here in the mythic setting and the chunky, arcade-style brawling. The Genesis version reshuffles the arcade original's enemy layouts and adjusts its controls, so it plays as its own take rather than a straight copy. It is slow and stiff by modern standards, and nobody will claim it is the deepest beat 'em up on the system, but its weird charm is undeniable, right down to an ending that reveals the whole adventure was a movie shoot, with the cast taking a bow.
If you unboxed a Genesis in 1989 or 1990, this is the game that defined the console's first impression, and its voice clips, its transformations and Neff's final rhino form are etched into early-90s gaming memory. Playing it on original hardware is the most direct way to step back into the moment Sega's 16-bit era began.
