Item Description

In most horror games the flashlight is a convenience. In Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare it is a weapon, a lifeline and the reason the game looks the way it does. Darkworks built its pre-rendered rooms at several levels of illumination, so the beam sweeps across walls, picks out hidden items and throws shifting shadows, and the Creatures of Darkness that stalk Shadow Island shrink from the light.

It is Halloween night, 2001. Private investigator Edward Carnby's partner, Charles Fiske, has turned up dead off Shadow Island while searching for three ancient tablets said to unlock a terrible power. Carnby takes up the case alongside Aline Cedrac, a young professor who believes the island's Obed Morton is her father, but their plane is attacked on the way in and the two land apart. From there you choose whose story to play. Carnby's campaign leans into combat, with his double-barreled revolver and magnesium rounds, while Aline's focuses on puzzles and investigation, and their paths cross at key moments so that playing both reveals the full picture.

The New Nightmare rebooted the series that started it all. Frédérick Raynal's original Alone in the Dark helped invent survival horror in 1992, years before Resident Evil gave the genre its name, and this fourth entry brought Carnby back with fixed camera angles, scarce ammunition and a mansion full of locked doors. The PlayStation version arrived in 2001, late in the console's life, and drew generally favorable reviews for how much atmosphere it wrung out of the original hardware.

It sits right at the hinge between the genre's founding father and the Resident Evil era it inspired: a moody, two-sided ghost story at its best on a dark night with the volume turned up.
