Item Description

A facehugger skittering out of the dark, a pulse rifle's counter ticking down, and a screech from somewhere overhead: Alien Trilogy knew exactly what made the films frightening and built a shooter around it. Probe Entertainment's first-person tour through the Alien saga reached the PlayStation in early 1996, and it was one of the system's first great licensed games.

You play Ellen Ripley, here recast as a colonial marine and sent to LV-426 after the rest of her unit is wiped out. Rather than retelling the movies scene by scene, the game borrows their most memorable settings and folds them into a campaign of mission-driven levels: an infested colony, a grim prison facility and finally the derelict alien ship. Text briefings set objectives beyond simply finding the exit, which gave it more structure than most shooters of its day, and the xenomorph roster covers the full life cycle, from facehuggers and chestbursters to adult aliens that drop from the ceiling and the hulking Alien Queens waiting as bosses.

The sound design is the real star, packed with sampled screeches and effects lifted from the films, and the claustrophobic view and murky industrial palette only add to the tension. Acclaim's then-new motion capture was used to animate the aliens, and Electronic Gaming Monthly named it Shooter Game of the Year. It sold well enough to join Sony's Greatest Hits line, the budget reissue label reserved for the PlayStation's strongest sellers.

Few licensed games of the era captured their source this faithfully with so few polygons. Played with the lights off on original PlayStation hardware, it is still a gritty, nerve-jangling trip back to the Alien universe.
