Item Description

Wonderland has never looked this beautiful or this broken. Alice: Madness Returns arrived eleven years after American McGee's Alice, and it finds Alice Liddell out of the asylum but far from well, living in a grimy Victorian London orphanage under the care of the psychiatrist Dr. Angus Bumby. She still cannot piece together the truth about the fire that killed her family, and every time her grip on reality slips, she tumbles back into a Wonderland now being torn apart by a monstrous Infernal Train that corrupts everything in its path.

Spicy Horse, American McGee's studio, built the adventure as a blend of platforming and combat, and simply moving through it is a pleasure. Alice floats on the billow of her dress, strings together multiple jumps, and dodges by dissolving into a burst of butterflies. Shrinking down reveals hidden paths and clues scrawled on the walls, so every room is worth a second look. Her arsenal is pure dark whimsy: the Vorpal Blade for quick slashes, the Pepper Grinder for rapid fire, the heavy Hobby Horse for shattering armor, a Teapot Cannon, and an umbrella for knocking projectiles back. Teeth collected along the way pay for weapon upgrades, and when her health runs low, Hysteria lets her turn the tables in a brief black-and-white rage.

The chapters are where the game earns its reputation. The Hatter's Domain is a steam-powered factory of clockwork and grease, the Deluded Depths sink Alice beneath the sea, and the Mysterious East trades in paper-lantern serenity before the Queen of Hearts' blood-red realm takes over. The Cheshire Cat drifts in and out as a cryptic guide, and the trips back to soot-blackened London make the fantasy sequences feel even more feverish by comparison. Occasional side-scrolling and sliding detours break up the action and keep the pacing lively.

Critics were split on how repetitive the combat could get, but almost nobody argued with the art direction, and the game has kept a devoted cult following ever since. It is the fullest realization of McGee's twisted take on Lewis Carroll, a story about grief and memory dressed in porcelain, steam and ink. If your idea of Wonderland runs closer to a gothic nightmare than a tea party, this is the version of the story that will stay with you.
