Item Description

The Tomcat is back in the air, but the sky has changed. After Burner III is the Sega CD home version of Strike Fighter, a 1991 Japanese arcade game that followed G-LOC: Air Battle, and it took a winding route home: first to Fujitsu's FM Towns computer, then to Sega's CD add-on in Japan at the end of 1992 and in North America and Europe in 1993. It carries the After Burner name for good reason. You are once again strapped into an F-14 Tomcat, flying low and fast over hostile ground and taking on everything the enemy can throw into the air.

The rhythm will feel familiar to anyone who played the earlier games: roll hard to shake incoming fire, sweep the lock-on across a cluster of targets and let the missiles fly, then do it again before the next wave arrives. Ground targets matter here too, with tank patrols, radio towers and missile sites waiting to be flattened. The biggest change is that your missile supply is unlimited, so the old After Burner habit of rationing shots until the next resupply gives way to constant aggression. A camera option lets you fly from the arcade's first-person cockpit view or switch to a third-person chase view that echoes the look of the older games.

The Sega CD release also reshaped the soundtrack. Rather than relying on the laid-back jazz and electronica of the FM Towns version, it borrows most of its in-flight music from the FM Towns port of After Burner II, a swap retro reviewers have called a big improvement. The ground rotation is notably smooth for 16-bit hardware, even if the landscapes are sparse, and critics of the day were unimpressed by how thin it felt, so this is a curio for After Burner devotees rather than the series at its peak.

That is exactly its appeal for a Sega collector. After Burner III sits between the Genesis After Burner II and the 32X's After Burner Complete in Sega's own hardware history, and it is the form Strike Fighter took when Sega brought it to the Sega CD. Shelve it next to the Genesis original and you can trace how Sega kept chasing that arcade rush of speed from one piece of hardware to the next.
