Item Description

Most tower defense games ask where to put your guns. Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault asks you to grab the whole city and spin it. After an event called the Silent Apocalypse, humanity survives in fortified circular cities, and every one of them is a target for the Protonovus, colossal monsters hungry for the same Altenite the cities harvest to stay alive.

The twist is that each city is built in rings. During a strike, you rotate those rings with the analog stick to swing your weapons toward the monsters as they close in, which turns defense into a frantic, hands-on puzzle. Strikes last only a couple of minutes, and before each one you choose from three enemy sets that mix fast and slow attackers, packs and lone giants, so you can pick the fight your defenses are ready for.

Between battles, a planning mode handles the city-building side. You spend crystals to research technology, construct weapons and add residential buildings, and successful defenses persuade citizens to migrate in. After each strike your team's performance is reviewed and you can single someone out for praise, while new team members join as the chapter-based campaign unfolds through short, clearly defined objectives.

Developer Acquire, the studio behind Tenchu and Way of the Samurai, released it in Japan in 2015, and the PlayStation 3 edition reached the West in 2016, late in the console's life. Critics found the story chatter grating but enjoyed the fast, unusual strikes, and spinning a ring of weapons into a monster's path at the last second is a feeling few strategy games offer. It is the kind of oddball late-era release that makes a PS3 shelf more interesting.
