Ubisoft Montpellier shipped two side-scrolling platformers in 2011, and while Rayman Origins took most of the spotlight, The Adventures of Tintin: The Game shows the same studio's knack for movement. Made alongside Steven Spielberg's film, it turns Hergé's boy reporter into a 2D platforming hero, with running, leaping, climbing and punching animated with obvious care.
The adventure follows the film's hunt for the secret of the Unicorn, with Tintin, Snowy and Captain Haddock chasing clues from one exotic location to the next. The platforming is broken up by flying stages in a plane, motorcycle chase levels and swashbuckling sword fights with Haddock. Snowy gets his own moments too, following scents and barking to scare off dangerous creatures, while Thomson and Thompson turn up to make arrests. The console version even restores the Bird brothers as villains and adds a castle sequence that nods to The Black Island.
The local co-op mode is the hidden treat. Set inside Captain Haddock's nightmares, it has players teaming up as Tintin, Haddock and even the opera singer Bianca Castafiore, combining their abilities to get through stages built around teamwork. It is a playful, imaginative side of the game, and critics singled it out for praise alongside the platforming.
Reviews were mixed overall, with most critics finding it on the easy side, which makes it a comfortable pick for younger players and a relaxed weekend run for longtime readers. Its real appeal is a license handled with taste: the clean visuals honor Hergé's world, and the animation captures Haddock's bluster and Tintin's pluck. For Tintin collectors, it is the PlayStation 3's take on the comic's most famous treasure hunt.
While the movie taps into the nostalgia vein of Hergé's original comic strip, the game feeds from the memory of traditional platformers. Platforming is the beating heart of Ubisoft's crisp, charming riff on Spielberg's recent film. The subtlety and nuance of the cast's movements, from daring leaps to nose-smashing right-hooks, is an artistic delight that keeps the sidescrolling action consistently engaging, even if it does turn out to have more ideas than its slender runtime can cope with.
