Item Description

Most Atari 7800 games are about reflexes. Ace of Aces is about flying an entire aircraft. Based on Artech's 1986 computer hit, originally published by Accolade, it puts you in a Royal Air Force de Havilland Mosquito, the twin-engine wooden fighter-bomber that became one of the most versatile planes of the Second World War, and sends you after German fighters and bombers, V-1 flying bombs, U-boats and trains.

What made Ace of Aces stand out was the sense of being inside the plane rather than steering a sprite. You flip between five stations: the cockpit, a view out along each wing, the bomb bay and the navigation map, dogfighting from the pilot's seat one moment and lining up bombs on a U-boat or a train below the next. Before takeoff you decide how much fuel and ordnance to carry, knowing that a heavier Mosquito is a slower one, and anything left unused at the end of a mission pays out in points. Missions reward planning as much as aim, and practice runs let you hone your dogfighting or your bombing against less aggressive enemies before the real sorties.

On the 7800 it occupies an unusual niche. The console's library leaned heavily on arcade conversions and action games, and full flight-combat titles were rare, so Ace of Aces gives the system a slower, more tactical flavor than almost anything else on the shelf. It was an ambitious undertaking for 8-bit hardware, and that ambition is the charm.

For players who grew up on early computer flight games, or 7800 fans who want to see the system stretched beyond the arcade, this is a cartridge with a personality all its own and a fine way to spend an evening hunting buzz bombs over the Channel.
