Item Description

In most platformers a pit is the end. In A Hole New World it is a doorway. Drop through a gap in the floor and the Potion Master tumbles into the Upside Down World, an inverted mirror of the stage above where secrets hide, enemies lurk and the fight carries on in both worlds.

MadGearGames built the whole thing as a love letter to the NES era. The pixel art is crisp and colorful, the controls are tight and immediate, and the game proudly skips tutorials and easy modes, trusting you to learn each section by playing it. Your weapons are potions, classic arcade jump-and-shoot action with an alchemical twist, and your arsenal grows as you go, because every boss you defeat hands over its powers. The fairy Fäy rides along as your only companion while you push back the monsters invading the city across five worlds.

The seven bosses are the highlight, gigantic, detailed and full of patterns to read and exploit, and more than thirty enemy types keep each world feeling distinct. Finishing the story is only the start: multiple endings, a Game+ mode, a Challenge Mode and a Boss Rush give completionists plenty to chase long after the credits roll.

It is a compact, sharp-edged indie that wears its influences openly, and a physical PlayStation 4 release of a game like this is the kind of thing retro platformer fans like to have on the shelf beside the classics that inspired it.
