Item Description
Based on the 1994 TriStar Pictures film of the same name, 3 Ninjas Kick Back was developed by Malibu Interactive and brought to the Sega Genesis by Psygnosis, the British publisher better known for Lemmings and Shadow of the Beast, while Sony Imagesoft handled the Super NES version. It arrived in that sweet spot of pop culture when every kid wanted to be a ninja, and Rocky, Colt and Tum-Tum were heroes to a generation raised on Saturday morning adventures and VHS rentals. It is a real time capsule from that era.
The story follows the film. Fifty years earlier, the brothers' grandfather won a magical dagger by defeating Koga in a martial arts tournament, a prize said to unlock a hidden treasure cave alongside an ancient samurai sword, and now Koga has stolen it. The three boys set out to get it back, fighting through side-scrolling stages full of colorful enemies and boss encounters on the way to a final battle with Koga himself and the return of the dagger to its rightful owner in Japan.
Each brother brings his own weapon and style: Rocky fights with a bo, Colt with a katana and Tum-Tum with twin sai. Every level is a chain of smaller zones that you push through to the far edge, past rebel ninjas in Koga's service, snapping dogs and bats, moving boulders and spike traps, with a minor boss waiting to close out each one. Two players can team up, and the weapon-swinging platform action is the kind of pick-up-and-play fun that defined the Genesis library, straightforward, fast and satisfying in short bursts. It is a late licensed Genesis action game from the moment when movie tie-ins were everywhere and the console was at the height of its powers, and a nostalgic trip for anyone who wore out the films on tape.
