Item Description
Willem Dafoe as a Bond villain is the kind of casting the films never got around to, and Everything or Nothing pulled it off in 2004. He plays Nikolai Diavolo, a protégé of A View to a Kill's Max Zorin, opposite Pierce Brosnan, who lent his scanned likeness and voice to what became his final outing as 007. EA surrounded him with a cast worthy of a real film: Judi Dench as M, John Cleese as Q, Heidi Klum and Shannon Elizabeth, Richard Kiel back as Jaws, and Mýa singing the title song.
EA Redwood Shores built the game as a playable Bond movie rather than another first-person shooter. The switch to a third-person camera lets Bond hug cover, rappel down buildings and pull off hand-to-hand takedowns, while Bond Sense slows time so you can pick out targets and weak points. The original script sends him across four continents, from the Valley of the Kings in Egypt to the French Quarter of New Orleans, and hidden Bond Moments reward players who find the stylish solution to a problem instead of just the loud one.
The driving sequences are where it feels most like the films. Bond tears through chases behind the wheel of an Aston Martin Vanquish and a Porsche Cayenne and takes to two wheels on a Triumph motorcycle, with gadgets woven into the action as much as the gunplay. Beyond the main story, a dedicated co-op campaign lets two players team up as agents on split-screen, a feature that made it a couch favorite.
Many players still point to Everything or Nothing as the high-water mark of Bond games, the moment when the series' cinematic ambitions and its gameplay finally lined up. On the original Xbox it plays sharp and looks the part, and it offers something no film ever did: one last Brosnan adventure with a story written just for him.
