How Coolection's Negotiation Feature Makes Collecting Fairer

The Collector’s Sixth Sense

Negotiating for collectibles can sometimes feel like a game of chance. With many online marketplaces enforcing rigid pricing policies or using auction methods that can be inconvenient, finding flexibility in the process can be challenging. At Coolection, we took a different approach to buying and selling collectibles online. We developed a unique negotiation feature that replicates the in-person convention experience—bringing the personal touch of face-to-face bargaining to an online setting. This article explains how the feature works and why it offers a fairer, more flexible experience for both buyers and sellers.

Convention Experience Goes Online

A Personal Touch

Coolection started as a convention vendor, where the best part of the job was interacting with collectors in person. At conventions, you could examine items closely, discuss details face-to-face, and agree on prices together. The camaraderie between seller and collector made the experience enjoyable. We wanted to capture this atmosphere without being limited by the weekend schedules of physical conventions.

In traditional online stores, chat boxes and email threads replace in-person talks, and the typical shopping cart system doesn't accommodate bargaining. We realized many buyers missed the personal touch of negotiating at conventions, so we created the "Submit an Offer" feature to bring that experience into the digital world.

How the Negotiation Feature Works: Step-by-Step on Coolection

Step 1: Click the “Submit an Offer” Button

Each listing on Coolection includes an easy-to-find "Submit an Offer" option next to the price. Once clicked, a prompt will appear where you can submit your proposed offer price, provide your email for communication, and add an optional message explaining your reasoning.

Step 2: Make Your Offer

If you're interested in an item but notice minor flaws (e.g., a torn box on a vintage game), you can propose a lower price. Reference the condition of the item and provide market data or comparable sales to back up your offer. This allows for a conversation where both parties can communicate and adjust expectations.

Step 3: Wait for Our Response

Once you submit your offer, Coolection reviews it. We may accept your offer, adjust the price with a counteroffer, or decline if the price is too far off market value. Typically, offers that are 5% to 25% below the listed price are considered reasonable, depending on the condition and rarity of the item.

Rationale: A Successful Offer

Effective negotiation requires polite, realistic communication. For example, if you propose a $5 offer for a $100 item without explanation, the chances of success are slim. However, if you highlight a flaw, reference market trends, or mention a price drop, you increase the likelihood of striking a deal.

Coolection Tip: Provide context to your offer. A well-reasoned message is more likely to receive a fair response.

Respect, Reasoning, and Realistic Pricing

While we encourage open negotiation, we ask buyers to avoid lowball offers without reasoning. Sending multiple unreasonable offers can result in suspension from the site. We aim to keep the negotiation system friendly, and sellers also put effort into acquiring, cleaning, and verifying each collectible.

When Prices Reflect Condition

The condition of collectible items, especially retro games, plays a major role in their pricing. A factory-sealed game might command a premium, while a loose cartridge with no manual will be valued differently.

For example, Ninja Gaiden III could fetch a high price if the box and label are intact. However, if there’s visible damage (e.g., a tear), you can propose a more reasonable price based on the visible defects.

Coolection Tip: Our listings feature real images that show the condition of the items, removing the guesswork from your purchase.

Negotiate with Confidence: Building a Coolection

At Coolection, we embrace the philosophy that “We’re not Amazon”. We encourage direct communication, bargaining, and personal connections between buyers and sellers. Retro games often carry deep sentimental value, and many collectors are flexible with pricing when the item is in good condition.

Condition as a Variable

One of the most important factors in retro game pricing is the condition. Small imperfections, such as torn boxes or loose labels, can significantly affect an item’s price. Coolection’s real photos reveal these details, so you can assess the condition and propose a fair price.

If you're looking for a mint condition item, you may want to negotiate for a discount due to imperfections. If there’s a rare gem, we may counter with a price that reflects its rarity.

Negotiation in the Digital Age

The "Submit an Offer" feature at Coolection gives collectors the power to negotiate, providing an experience similar to the conventions where personal connections are key. We prioritize logic, market data, and clear communication to ensure that both buyers and sellers get a fair deal.

As a collector, you can negotiate the price based on the condition and market trends, allowing for a more informed and personalized buying experience.
