Zoo Tycoon on Xbox One lets you do something the PC classics never could: walk your own zoo at ground level, stop by an enclosure and pull faces at a chimpanzee to see what it does back. Developed by Frontier Developments, the studio behind RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, and published by Microsoft Studios as part of the Xbox One's launch lineup in November 2013, it reimagines the famous management series for the living room.
From an overhead view you lay out habitats, paths, food stands and staff facilities, then keep your animals fed, clean and content while guests stream through the gates. Drop down to a customizable avatar, or hop in a golf cart, and you can tour the park yourself. Kinect support is optional but adds the most charming touches, such as feeding animals, hosing them down for a bath and those face-making mini-games. Every animal has its own name and personality, and the conservation side of the game lets you release animals back into the wild and receive updates once they are on their way.
There are three ways to play: a campaign of objective-driven scenarios, puzzle-like challenge maps with tight limits on land or resources, and a free play mode with unlimited funds for building the zoo of your dreams. It is a gentle, approachable simulation rather than a hardcore spreadsheet, which makes it a natural pick for younger players and families who want to share a controller and watch the lions together, and it is a fun piece of the console's first-day software library.
