Item Description

Zo-Zu the Punisher is a goblin with a grudge against real estate. Whenever a land enters the battlefield under any player's control, Zo-Zu deals 2 damage to that land's controller. That includes you, so the art of playing it is building a deck that needs fewer lands than everyone else and racing ahead before the damage evens out.

For three mana, you get a 2/2 legendary Goblin Warrior that turns your opponents' routine land drops into a slow burn. Low-curve red aggro decks love that math, since they stop playing lands early while the opponent keeps paying. In multiplayer Commander every land drop at the table costs its controller 2 life, and fetch lands sting twice: once when the fetch land enters and again when the land it finds arrives. Its flavor text keeps the threat simple: "He does not tolerate intruders."

Zo-Zu first appeared in Betrayers of Kamigawa, and this is the Duel Decks: Mind vs. Might printing, collector number 41, illustrated by Wayne Reynolds, in non-foil. Mind vs. Might, released in 2017, pitted Jhoira of the Ghitu against Lovisa Coldeyes in a pair of ready-to-play decks, and Reynolds' snarling goblin fits right in with that duel's brawling energy.
