Zen: Intergalactic Ninja is one of those late-era NES games that tends to fly under the radar but earns real respect from the players who give it a chance. Based on the comic book of the same name, it stars Zen, an alien superhero turned eco-warrior, who teams up with Jeremy Baker, Earth's starchild, and the Recycled Heroes to stop Lord Contaminous, a villain born from pollution and sludge who plans to destroy a buried geocrystal and doom the planet. It's a premise that sounds wild on paper and has the kind of offbeat, colorful energy that made the NES library so endlessly entertaining.
Released in 1993, near the tail end of the NES's commercial run, the game was developed by Konami, and that pedigree shows. It is mostly a side-scroller that changes style constantly, mixing in isometric levels, a high-speed mine cart ride and a fall down a long shaft past crushing platforms. Across twelve levels, Zen rescues flora from acid rain and battles Sulfura, takes on the Oil Slick on a burning oil rig, fights Garbageman's minions in a plutonium mine and faces Smogger in a toxic plant, with recycling bonus rounds and rescue stages along the way.
Zen's staff handles quick swipes and a longer-reaching jab, and after a jab he can grab an enemy and slam them, much like Konami's own TMNT III. He can wall-jump and hang from pipes in some side-scrolling levels, and the colorful cast of villains does an effective job of selling the environmental themes. For a game built on a comic license, it punches above its weight: a varied, ambitious late Konami NES release with big ideas.
IF YOU LIKE FIGHTING DIRTY, YOU'RE GONNA DIG ZEN! The greatest environmental disaster in human history is about to hit your backyard. But you're not backing down, because you're Zen, a cold-blooded Ninja warrior who's come to Earth to clean the clock of Lord Contaminous and his crud-loving cronies. But wasting these slimeballs won't be easy. Because they'll spew forth the most hazardous graphics ever to wreak havoc on your NES. We're talking horizontal, vertical and 3/4 view scrolling that will give you a whole new perspective on acid rain, oil spills and ozone-ravaging smog. And wait till you see the fluid character movements. They're hotter than a uranium-oozing nuclear meltdown! There are 12 total levels, each with its own ecological enemies, toxic traps and pollution-fighting objectives. You'll battle oil rig fires, trying to save trapped workers. Use your Photon-Stick to zap gaseous garbage men on a high-speed plutonium mining car ride. Vertical jump through two separate screens to reach a venomous vixen who's single-handedly scorching the rainforests. And spin kick Smogger, a smoked-out scum of the Earth. Finally, try to survive a rescue mission stage.
