Item Description

A giant bird swoops over Outset Island and carries off a little girl from her lookout tower, and her brother, still dressed in the green clothes the island gives boys on his birthday, talks his way onto a pirate ship to get her back. That is how The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker begins, and on Wii U its bright, cel-shaded world looks better than ever.

When it first arrived on GameCube, the cartoon art style split opinion. Two decades later it is clear the gamble paid off, because Wind Waker has aged more gracefully than almost any 3D game of its generation. The HD version keeps Toon Link's expressive faces and the bold shapes of the original while adding a new lighting engine, higher-resolution textures and a soft, glowing finish that makes the Great Sea shimmer.

The heart of the game is sailing. Aboard the talking boat, the King of Red Lions, Link charts an ocean dotted with islands, from Windfall's busy port and Dragon Roost's volcanic peak to the Forsaken Fortress, and conducts the wind itself with the Wind Waker baton. Tetra and her pirate crew, the sage Medli and the tiny violinist Makar join the story as it heads toward a sunken Hyrule frozen in time and a showdown with Ganondorf. The dungeons are classic Zelda craftsmanship, and the swordplay, with its parries and dramatic counters, still feels sharp.

Nintendo also smoothed the rough edges that bothered players in 2003. The Swift Sail, found at Windfall's auction house, makes long crossings faster and turns the wind in your favor automatically, while the Triforce hunt late in the game requires far less chart-chasing. Items and the sea chart move to the GamePad, aiming can use motion controls, the Picto Box gains a selfie mode, and Hero Mode is ready from the start for anyone who wants a stiffer challenge. The result is the definitive way to set sail on the Great Sea and a cornerstone of the Wii U's Zelda lineup.
