It is Link's birthday on Outset Island, and by tradition he has just been handed the green tunic of a legendary hero he has only heard about in stories. Before the day is out, a monstrous bird swoops over the island and carries off his little sister, Aryll. So begins The Wind Waker, a Zelda that trades the familiar fields of Hyrule for an endless, glittering ocean and a story that is warm, funny and quietly heartbreaking in equal measure.
The Great Sea is the star. Link sails it aboard the King of Red Lions, a talking boat with a surprising past, and uses the Wind Waker baton to conduct songs that change the direction of the wind, warp across the map or turn day into night. Every square of the sea chart hides something: an island to climb, a sunken treasure to haul up with the grappling hook, a submarine full of enemies, a lookout platform guarding a secret. Back on dry land, the Deku Leaf lets Link glide between ledges, the Picto Box turns him into a photographer, and Windfall Island is packed with side stories worth lingering over. The dungeons hold up their end too, from the lava-lit Dragon Roost Cavern to the Tower of the Gods rising out of the waves.
When Nintendo revealed the cel-shaded look, plenty of fans balked. Two decades later, it is the reason the game has aged so gracefully. The cartoon style lets Link's face carry real emotion, and his eyes even glance toward hidden items and approaching enemies as a subtle hint. Combat has a lively rhythm thanks to a parry move that sends Link vaulting over or rolling around a foe, and Ganondorf gets some of the richest characterization he has ever had. The story's big reveal about what lies beneath the waves, and the ending that follows, give this cheerful-looking game surprising emotional weight.
The GameCube original also has a quirk its later remaster dropped: the Tingle Tuner, which let a second player with a Game Boy Advance and link cable call in hints, items and the occasional bomb strike from Tingle himself. The 2013 Wii U version smoothed out pacing, most famously the late-game Triforce chart hunt, but this is the release that started it all, with the art, the music and the sailing exactly as they first reached players in 2003. Hoist the sail on the hardware Wind Waker was made for and the Great Sea still feels as vast as it did then.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is the first Zelda game for the Nintendo GameCube and also the first in the series to employ cel-shading, a lighting and texturing technique that results in the game having a cartoon-like appearance. Like its predecessors, The Wind Waker is an action game with puzzle-solving and light role-playing elements. Basic gameplay mechanics are similar to those found in Ocarina of Time, but it differentiates itself with its massive Great Sea which must be explored using a boat named King of Red Lions.
