Link's first trip into the Twilight ends with him on four legs, chained in a prison cell, while a sharp-tongued imp grins at him through the bars. That imp is Midna, one of the best companions in Zelda history, and the moment sets the tone for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, the darkest and most grown-up take on Hyrule of its era. This HD remaster brings it to Wii U with sharper visuals, a smoother pace and new features built for the GamePad.

The adventure begins quietly in Ordon Village, where Link works as a ranch hand, before a veil of Twilight swallows the provinces of Hyrule and the usurper king Zant steps out of the shadows. In the light, Link rides Epona across the widest Hyrule Field the series had seen, fights on horseback and learns hidden sword skills from a mysterious spectral warrior. In the Twilight he becomes a wolf, sniffing out scents and leaping between ledges with Midna on his back. The dungeons are among the series' most inventive: the Lakebed Temple, the haunted sands of the Arbiter's Grounds, the cozy Snowpeak Ruins, home of the yeti couple Yeto and Yeta, and the City in the Sky, all built around tools like the Clawshot, Spinner, Ball and Chain and Dominion Rod.

The HD version, developed with Australian studio Tantalus, is based on the GameCube release, so Link is left-handed and Hyrule is laid out as originally designed. Inventory and map move to the GamePad, aiming can use its motion controls, and the whole game can be played on the GamePad screen. The Tears of Light hunts are shorter, wallets hold more Rupees, a Ghost Lantern helps you track Poe souls, and Hero Mode is available from the start for veterans. With a Wolf Link amiibo, players can enter the Cave of Shadows, a new challenge dungeon fought entirely as the wolf.

It is the most polished way to play a Zelda that many fans hold up as the series' most atmospheric, and an unmissable piece of the Wii U's run of Nintendo remasters, the kind of game you finish and immediately miss.
