Item Description

You know where every switch in the Deku Tree is. You know which block to push in the Forest Temple and exactly how the Water Temple's water levels work. Master Quest takes all of that confidence and turns it against you. It is Ocarina of Time with the same Hyrule, the same story and the same items, but with its dungeons rebuilt from the inside out: new room layouts, new puzzles and tougher enemy placements that make even veteran players stop and think again.

The remix has a fascinating history. It began life in Japan as Ura Zelda, an expansion built for the Nintendo 64DD disk drive, and when that add-on barely reached players it was finished but shelved, because pressing it on cartridges was too expensive. The cheaper GameCube disc finally made it possible, and Nintendo released it as a bonus disc for players who pre-ordered The Wind Waker. The same disc also carries the original Ocarina of Time, so you get the classic and its harder twin together.

Ocarina itself needs little introduction. Z-targeting, the context-sensitive action button and Link's leap from child to adult through the Temple of Time reshaped what a 3D adventure could be, and Koji Kondo's melodies, from Saria's Song to the Hyrule Field theme, are woven right into the play through the ocarina itself. On GameCube both versions run at double the Nintendo 64's resolution, and reviewers singled out the revised puzzles in Master Quest for demanding precise timing and finding new uses for familiar items.

What makes Master Quest worth having is that it gives one of the most familiar games ever made the thrill of a first playthrough again. The overworld opens up exactly as you remember, then each dungeon door leads somewhere you have never quite been. Newcomers can start with the original on the same disc; veterans can go straight to the version Nintendo once hid inside a cancelled add-on and find out how well they really know Hyrule.

About the game

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Master Quest is a reworked version of the original Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64. Master Quest contains largely the same content as the original game but with more redesigned and difficult dungeons. Master Quest was available on a special bonus disc that also contained the original Ocarina of Time, it was given out in limited quantities with preorders of The Wind Waker. It was previously developed to be released as an expansion to the original game via the Nintendo 64DD, but that version was cancelled due to the lackluster sales of the hardware.
