Item Description

Step out of Kokiri Forest and onto the open grass of Hyrule Field for the first time, and you can feel the moment 3D adventure games grew up. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time took the series' puzzle-packed dungeons, hidden secrets and sense of discovery and rebuilt all of it in three dimensions, and so many of its answers to how a 3D action game should work are still in use today. Developed by Nintendo EAD with Shigeru Miyamoto producing, it launched in November 1998 to the kind of reception few games ever get, including the first perfect 40 out of 40 ever awarded by Famitsu, and it has sat at or near the top of all-time review rankings ever since.

Much of the credit goes to Z-targeting. Lock onto an enemy with the Z trigger and the camera, movement and swordplay all fall into place, letting Link circle, sidestep, raise his shield and strike with precision. Navi, his fairy companion, flags enemies and points the way, and a single context-sensitive button handles climbing, pushing, talking and grabbing. It all sounds routine now precisely because so many games borrowed it.

The adventure itself is huge in scope. Young Link leaves the forest to stop Ganondorf, draws the Master Sword in the Temple of Time and wakes seven years later as an adult in a Hyrule fallen to darkness, and the quest moves between the two eras, with each Link carrying his own tools and reaching different places. The ocarina ties it together: songs like Zelda's Lullaby, Epona's Song and the Song of Storms open the way forward, call your horse, bring the rain and, later, warp you across the map. Dungeons build in complexity, from the cavernous belly of Lord Jabu-Jabu to the Forest Temple's twisted corridors and the notorious Water Temple, while the Gold Skulltula hunt, Gerudo horseback archery and the Lake Hylia fishing pond can swallow whole afternoons.

Koji Kondo's music deserves its own mention. Hyrule Field's swelling theme, the uneasy drums of the Shadow Temple and the melodies you play yourself on the ocarina have become part of gaming's shared vocabulary. Nintendo marked the North American launch with gold cartridges in boxes branded as a Collector's Edition, and the game has been remade and re-released since, but the Nintendo 64 cartridge is the original 1998 experience on the hardware it was designed for, with the Z trigger and C buttons working exactly the way its designers intended.

About the game

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the fifth main installment of The Legend of Zelda series and the first to be released for the Nintendo 64. It was one of the most highly anticipated games of its age, and is listed among the greatest video games ever created by numerous websites and magazines. The gameplay of Ocarina of Time was revolutionary for its time, it has arguably made more of an impact on later games in the series than any of its predecessors even though they had the same cores of exploration, dungeons, puzzles and item usage. Among the gameplay mechanics, one of the most noteworthy is the time-traveling system. The game begins with the player controlling the child Link, but later on an adult Link becomes a playable character as well and each of them has certain unique abilities. Ocarina of Time also introduces the use of music to solve puzzles: as new songs are learned, they can be used to solve puzzles, gain access to new areas and warp to different locations. Dungeon exploration is somewhat more puzzle-oriented than in earlier games but they are not too complex.
