Item Description

The Minish Cap asks a simple question that turns out to be brilliant: what does Hyrule look like when you are the size of a thimble? Shrink down and mushrooms become mountains, blades of grass become a forest, and a puddle becomes a lake you need a lily pad to cross. Capcom built it with Nintendo, from the same studio that made the Oracle games, and it is a fresh, inventive Zelda with a personality all its own.

The adventure begins at Hyrule's Picori Festival, where the sorcerer Vaati shatters the sacred Picori Blade and turns Princess Zelda to stone. Link sets out with Ezlo, a cranky, talking bird-shaped cap who rides on his head and does the shrinking for him, and the story behind Ezlo and Vaati gives this game its role as the origin story for the Four Sword villain. Minish portals hidden on stumps, pots and rocks let Link drop to Minish scale, and that size-shifting changes everything about how you approach puzzles, exploration and combat. A path you walked right past at full height opens into a whole new area once you are small enough to see it.

The dungeons are tight and clever, from the Deepwood Shrine to the Fortress of Winds, and the item set is one of the series' most playful: the Gust Jar sucks up enemies and blows them away, the Mole Mitts dig through walls, and the Cane of Pacci flips objects over. Later in the quest, the restored sword can split Link into copies to solve puzzles together. Kinstone fusion, where you match paired stone halves with characters around Hyrule to unlock secrets, gives the side content a rewarding treasure-hunt quality, and there is a figurine collection waiting for completionists.

Visually, the game is a treat, with lush, colorful sprites and expressive animation that push the Game Boy Advance in the classic top-down style of A Link to the Past. Its tone is lighter and more whimsical than most Zelda games without giving up the satisfying dungeon design the series is known for. It was the last brand-new Zelda adventure made for the GBA, and it is a crown jewel of the system's library, a game worth playing on the hardware it was made for.

About the game

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap is a top-down action adventure game that tells the origins of the evil Vaati from Four Swords. Like most other titles in the series, The Minish Cap features the fully explorable land of Hyrule, although it can be viewed from the eyes of a human or the eyes of a Minish, a race of tiny people and an alternate form that Link can transform into. Unlike the multiplayer focus of the other games in the series, The Minish Cap retains the original form of exploration and dungeons as seen in A Link to the Past, Oracle of Seasons, and Oracle of Ages, as well as returning characters and game mechanics such as Malon and the Spin Attack. New features include fusing Kinstones and shrinking to the size of a Minish.
