Item Description

The moon has a face, and in seventy-two hours it is going to fall. Majora's Mask builds an entire Zelda adventure around that countdown. Skull Kid, twisted by the mask he stole from the Happy Mask Salesman, has set the moon on a collision course with Clock Town, and the only way to stop it is to play the Song of Time, rewind to the dawn of the first day and try again with everything you've learned.

That loop turns the land of Termina into a clockwork world. Every resident keeps a schedule, and the Bomber's Notebook tracks who needs help and when, from the townsfolk's small errands to the long, aching story of Anju and Kafei that plays out across all three days. Masks are the other pillar. The Deku, Goron and Zora masks transform Link into entirely different creatures, skipping across water as a Deku Scrub, curling up to roll along mountain trails as a Goron and torpedoing through Great Bay as a Zora, while roughly two dozen other masks open conversations, quests and secrets of their own.

Grezzo's 2015 remake follows its Ocarina of Time 3D with a careful rebuild rather than a reinvention. Textures and character models are sharper and closer to the original concept art, the frame rate runs smoother, and the Bomber's Notebook was redesigned so tracking dozens of overlapping schedules is far easier. The Song of Double Time now lets you jump to a specific hour instead of simply skipping ahead, several boss fights were reworked, and new fishing holes give Termina a relaxing sideline. The touch screen keeps masks and items within easy reach, and on New 3DS systems the C-Stick adds camera control.

On the Nintendo 64, Majora's Mask was built in a remarkably short time on the bones of Ocarina of Time, needed the Expansion Pak to run, and emerged as the strangest, saddest and most daring Zelda of its generation. Each of its four regions, Woodfall's poisoned swamp, the frozen heights of Snowhead, the storm-tossed Great Bay and the haunted canyon of Ikana with its upside-down Stone Tower Temple, ends with a giant to free and a corner of Termina visibly healed. The 3DS version is the most approachable way into that cult classic today, and the natural partner to Ocarina of Time 3D on the same shelf.
