Item Description

A storm, a shipwreck, and a boy waking up in a stranger's house on an island that should not exist. Link's Awakening opens far from Hyrule, with Link washed ashore on Koholint Island and nursed back to health by Marin, a girl who sings the Ballad of the Wind Fish and dreams of the world beyond the sea. On the mountaintop, inside a giant egg, the Wind Fish sleeps, and the only way home is to wake it by gathering the eight Instruments of the Sirens. It is the strangest, most wistful story the series had told, and the ending still lands with real weight.

Underneath that dreamlike premise sits one of the tightest top-down Zelda designs Nintendo ever built. The Roc's Feather lets Link hop over pits and enemies, which opens up fresh puzzles and side-scrolling underground passages that feel borrowed from a Mario game. Dungeons such as the Bottle Grotto and Eagle's Tower are compact but devious, and Koholint is packed with oddities: a Chain Chomp named BowWow you take for a walk, Goombas and Piranha Plants in the wrong franchise, and a trading sequence that winds across the whole island.

The DX release brought all of it into color, and Nintendo used the occasion to add something new. A secret Color Dungeon, opened by pushing the graveyard's headstones in the right order, is built around puzzles that only work in color, and clearing it lets you choose a red tunic that strengthens Link's attacks or a blue tunic that cuts the damage he takes. DX also introduced a photo album: a mouse photographer turns up at key moments across the island to snap pictures, and those shots could be printed on the Game Boy Printer.

Link's Awakening was the first Zelda adventure on the Game Boy, originally released in 1993, and it proved the series could fit in a pocket without shrinking its ambitions. Capcom later built the Oracle games on its foundation, and Nintendo returned to Koholint with a full remake on Switch in 2019. The DX cartridge is how a generation of Game Boy Color players first met Marin and heard her song, and it is the original version with every addition: color, the extra dungeon and the photo album, on the hardware they were made for.
