Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

A man in the town of Ruto introduces himself in three words: "I am Error." It is the most quoted line from the strangest Legend of Zelda ever made, and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link earns its reputation in every other way too. Nintendo followed the open, top-down original with a game that drops Link into side-scrolling sword fights, hands him experience levels and spells, and asks a lot more of the player's reflexes.

Link, now sixteen, sets out to break a sleeping curse laid on the Princess Zelda of legend by placing crystals in six palaces scattered across Hyrule, while Ganon's followers hunt him because his blood could bring their master back. The overworld map is viewed from above, but every encounter, town and palace switches to a side view where high and low sword thrusts and a raised shield decide each duel. Armored Iron Knuckles punish anyone who swings wildly. Experience points go into Attack, Magic and Life, wise men in towns like Rauru, Ruto and Mido teach spells such as Shield, Jump, Fairy and Thunder, and swordsmen teach the downward and upward thrusts that change how you fight. It all builds to the Great Palace, the Thunderbird and a duel with Link's own shadow.

No other Zelda went this far toward the action RPG, and its difficulty is legendary, yet ideas born here kept turning up in the series: a magic meter, towns full of people to talk to, and the idea of Link fighting a dark reflection of himself. Time has been kind to it, and players who meet it on its own terms find a tough, atmospheric adventure unlike anything else wearing the Zelda name.

This edition comes from Nintendo's Classic NES Series, the GBA line styled after the original NES releases, and Zelda II arrived in its second wave in October 2004. The game runs by emulation and plays largely as it did on the NES, saving to the cartridge, with the picture scaled down to fit the GBA screen. For Zelda collectors and anyone building the twelve-game North American Classic NES Series, it is a striking piece, and a handheld way to finally take on the Great Palace.
