Complete in box: the disc, the manual and the original case, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. This is a Japanese region release, and the packaging and game text are primarily in Japanese. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Discs are professionally resurfaced when they need it and tested before listing. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Four Links, four colors, one blade split four ways. In Japan this game is called Zelda no Densetsu: Yottsu no Tsurugi Purasu, or Four Swords+, and the Japanese release is the most complete version Nintendo ever put out. Alongside the main Hyrulean Adventure and the competitive Shadow Battle, it includes Navi Trackers, a stamp-rally race originally developed as Tetra's Trackers that never left Japan. For an import collector, that third mode is the reason this edition earns its place on the shelf.

Hyrulean Adventure is classic top-down Zelda reworked into tightly designed stages. Shadow Link has kidnapped the Shrine Maidens, Link's attempt to stop him accidentally frees the wind sorcerer Vaati, and behind it all waits Ganon, wielding a stolen trident and the Dark Mirror. Hyrule unfolds across eight worlds of three stages apiece, with bosses waiting along the way, and in every one the Links must gather enough Force Gems to power the Four Sword; fall short and the stage has to be played again. Playing solo, you command all four heroes at once, snapping them into formations to push blocks, flip switches and surround enemies, which turns ordinary puzzle rooms into clever little logistics problems.

With friends it becomes something else entirely. The game was designed around Game Boy Advance connectivity: each player uses a GBA as a controller, and when your Link ducks into a house or cave the action moves down to your own handheld screen, out of sight of everyone else. That split between shared screen and private screen makes for wonderful chaos, as teammates cooperate on puzzles one minute and scramble to snatch each other's Force Gems the next. A single player can simply use a standard GameCube controller.

Nintendo EAD built it with Toshiaki Suzuki directing and music by Koji Kondo and Asuka Ohta, and the look is a love letter to A Link to the Past: crisp sprite art layered with GameCube lighting, smoke and weather. The Game Boy Advance requirement made it a tough sell at the time, which is exactly why it stands apart as such an unusual, inventive Zelda, and this Japanese edition is the only way to play every mode it was built with.
