The first few minutes tell you everything. Link wakes in the Shrine of Resurrection with no memory, walks out to the edge of a cliff, and the Great Plateau falls away beneath him: forests, crumbling ruins, a smoking volcano on the horizon and Hyrule Castle wrapped in a sickly red haze. Every one of those places can be reached. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild threw out decades of series habit, the locked doors, the fixed dungeon order, the item that opens the next region, and replaced it with a single promise: if you can see it, you can go there.

That freedom works because the world runs on consistent rules rather than scripted puzzles. Fire spreads through dry grass and throws up drafts you can ride with the paraglider. Metal gear draws lightning in a storm. Link can climb almost any surface as long as his stamina holds, and the Sheikah Slate's runes, Magnesis, Stasis, Cryonis and Remote Bombs, are all in hand within the opening hours, so the solutions are yours to invent. Weapons break, which turns every fight into improvisation, and cooking over a campfire becomes a quiet survival ritual of tossing ingredients into a pot to see what comes out. Spread across the map are 120 shrines, compact puzzle rooms that reward clever physics, and hundreds of Korok seeds tucked under rocks and on top of lonely peaks.

The story arrives in fragments. A hundred years ago Calamity Ganon overran the kingdom, turning the four Divine Beasts built to stop it against Hyrule and defeating their Champions: Mipha, Revali, Daruk and Urbosa. Reclaiming those mechanical giants, each one a dungeon you reshape from the inside, forms the backbone of the quest, while recovered memories slowly piece together what happened between Link and Zelda. Or you can ignore all of it and march straight to the castle the moment you feel brave enough. The sparse, piano-led score leaves room for wind, rain and hoofbeats, swelling only when a moment has earned it.

Breath of the Wild launched alongside the Switch in March 2017, became the console's defining early game and took Game of the Year at The Game Awards that December. Its influence runs through the open-world games that followed, and its own sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, is built directly on this map. Playing it on Switch still captures what made that launch season so exciting: lifting all of Hyrule out of the dock and into your hands, and discovering that the horizon really does keep going.
