Item Description
Twilight Princess bridged Nintendo's GameCube and Wii generations, and a decade later Breath of the Wild did the same for Wii U and Switch, launching on both in March 2017. On Wii U it is the console's grand farewell, the platform it was first announced for, and the adventure that reinvented The Legend of Zelda from the ground up.
Link wakes in the Shrine of Resurrection with no memory, steps out onto the Great Plateau and sees almost the entire kingdom laid out in front of him. A hundred years after the Calamity, Ganon coils around Hyrule Castle, four Divine Beasts have turned against the kingdom, and the old Champions, Mipha, Daruk, Revali and Urbosa, are long gone. After a short tutorial, the game leaves you free to go anywhere: you can head straight for the castle if you are brave enough, or spend dozens of hours climbing, gliding and wandering first.
What makes it special is how its systems interact. The Sheikah Slate's runes, Magnesis, Stasis, Cryonis and Remote Bombs, turn every physics puzzle into an experiment. Fire spreads through dry grass and creates updrafts to ride with the paraglider, rain makes cliffs slippery, metal weapons attract lightning, and cooking turns ingredients into meals and elixirs for whatever the next trek demands. More than a hundred shrines offer bite-size puzzle rooms, Korok seeds hide in every odd rock formation, and Blood Moons bring defeated monsters back to life. Weapons break, so improvisation becomes a habit.
Directed by Hidemaro Fujibayashi and produced by Eiji Aonuma, it won Game of the Year at The Game Awards and changed the expectations for open-world games well beyond Nintendo. The Wii U version is the closing chapter of that console's Zelda story and a fitting companion to the HD remasters of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess that came before it on the same system.

About the game
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the first 3D open-world game in the Zelda series. Link can travel anywhere and be equipped with weapons and armor found throughout the world to grant him various bonuses. Unlike many games in the series, Breath of the Wild does not impose a specific order in which quests or dungeons must be completed. While the game still has environmental obstacles such as weather effects, inhospitable lands, or powerful enemies, many of them can be overcome using the right method. A lot of critics ranked Breath of the Wild as one of the best video games of all time.
