Item Description
Zapper is a cricket with a grudge and a pair of electrified antennae. Maggie the magpie has snatched his little brother Zipper, and the only way to get him back is to hop straight through her territory collecting the eggs she has stashed along the way. Published by Infogrames in 2002, this Game Boy Advance version is the handheld take on Zapper: One Wicked Cricket.
It plays like a puzzle-flavored cousin of Frogger. Viewed from overhead, Zapper hops his way across each level hunting down the eggs Maggie has hidden, and finding them is the key to moving on. Enemies and hazards move in set patterns, so reading their rhythm and timing your hops is the core skill, while narrow paths and tight gaps keep the routes tense. His electric antennae are his weapon, zapping enemies and obstacles that stand between him and the next egg.
Reviews at the time were mixed, and it is quirky rather than polished, which is a big part of its appeal now. It comes from the early-GBA moment when every publisher wanted a cheerful animal hero of its own, and Zapper's oddball premise makes it a fun discovery among the system's deeper cuts.
